Waist beads have been worn for centuries by women in many West African cultures. ... In Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and other West African countries, waist beads are a symbol of femininity, fertility, sensuality, and spiritual well-being. The women would wear these beads under there clothes and only their man/husband would see it when the women wanted it to be know that they wanted to have sex.
Also it was a way to tell if a woman was gaining or loosing weight since there was not scale during this time....also know as weight loss beads! When the beads would get loose it means weight loss. If the beads get tighter it means weight gain!
